Professional Tutor

Palmdale, CA

POSITION: Professional Tutor (Part-time, Seasonal 10-15 hours/week)

STARTING RATE: $18 (Educational qualifications required)


PRIMARY FUNCTION:

Responsible for providing Tutoring and homework assistance to children aged Kindergarten through 12th grade in the development of reading and math skills, or other specified subject. This position requires the ability to provide positive academic assistance through quality group and one-on-one tutoring with tangible outcomes. Tutors may be required to utilize Boys and Girls Club National curriculum in line with academic success.


KEY ROLES (Essential Job Responsibilities)

  1. Teaches math and reading skills to members from across ability levels and varies instruction accordingly.
  2. Coordinates academic tutorials including individualized and group tutoring, tutor/mentor training, and academic skills workshops.
  3. Ensures that lessons are planned with clear goals and objectives.
  4. Effectively implements academic activities with students, either one-on-one or with small groups.
  5. Encourages members to be involved in their own learning by reviewing their progress against their goals.
  6. Works as a team member with other staff members to support student's academic success.
  7. Facilitates positive study habits.
  8. Serves as liaison between student and the school staff by maintaining records of students’ progress, assessment results, and providing feedback.
  9. Ensures supervision of students at all times.
  10. Establishes and maintains student forms and files as required.

2. Employee Expectations

  • Attend and participate in Staff Trainings, which is essential to professional development and the success of Club programs.
  • Follow all policies and procedures at all times, including the Club’s Code of Conduct, which can be found in the Employee Handbook.
  • Follow the direction given by the Program Coordinator to ensure site expectations are met.

3. Communication

  • Must be able to inform important and relevant site information in staff meetings and to members, co-workers and supervisors.
  • Must be able to listen to co-workers, parents, youth members and community and other Boys & Girls Club affiliates.
  • Must be able to present important and relevant site/member information to supervisors.
  • Must be able to write and compose clear, concise, accurate written documentation and data reports as necessary.

4. Supervision & Safety

  • Must be able to supervise up to 20 youth and keep members engaged and safe during program time.
  • Provide sound and reasonable discipline to youth members at necessary times through written documentation (i.e. citation), and report to the Site Coordinator.
  • Practice and constantly be aware of safe practices like Crisis Management, Emergency Preparedness, CPR and First Aid, etc.
  • Maintain a clean and orderly work space at all times.

5. Other Duties as Necessary


QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Expectations

  • Must be at least 18 years of age and have valid identification.
  • Must have reliable transportation, valid driver’s license, and the ability to get to and from work at the scheduled times.
  • Must be willing to travel to multiple Club locations as needed.
  • The Club has a mandatory overtime policy when required. This could extend your workday and/or may require working on Saturdays as needed. You must be available for this type of work schedule.
  • Must have CPR/First Aid Certification upon employment (Adult, Child, Infant preferred) - Must be an in-person training, online certifications will not be accepted. 
  • Ability to organize, supervise, and reinforce positive behavior from members
  • Must pass a background check, TB and drug test.

2. Education/Skills

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Associates degree from accredited college or university or BA/BS preferred. (Includes increased starting pay rate)
  • Knowledge of tutoring practices and procedures.
  • Instructional Aide Qualified (Paraprofessional Test Required) 
  • Enthusiasm and patience for working with children and passion about education.
  • Excellent student interaction skills in 1:1 and small group settings.
  • Open to new ways of teaching math and reading skills and working with children.
  • Experience in structured tutoring environment or Elementary Education teaching certificate required.
  • Knowledge of a wide range of mathematic subject areas and English subject area (Reading and Writing).
  • Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy, as well as differentiated instruction based upon student learning styles.

3. Physical Requirements/Work Environment

  • Maintain a high energy level and positive representation.
  • Be comfortable performing multi-faceted projects in conjunction with day-to-day activities.
  • Must be able to work in loud environments and communicate clearly.  
  • Stand or sit for four plus hours per day.
  • Stoop, bend, climb, and walk frequently.
  • Lift up to 40 pounds.
